Tech Tips for performing or navigating lessons online
For performing or navigating a lesson online, you’ll want to keep the following tech tips in mind:
1. Pay attention to the lighting. Subtle cues are missed if a teacher or another member of your jam session can’t see you clearly. Too little light or too much light can be a problem. Ask the other members of your session if they can see you well.
2. Keep a healthy distance from the camera and microphone. Other members of your session may need to see your sense of beat or breathing patterns. In addition to the visual concerns, singing or playing too close to a microphone can cause it to buzz. If you’re playing a piano, don’t place your device on top of the piano. The vibrations from your instrument will cause the microphone to buzz as well.
3. Test your device on the video platform you’re using before connection. You may need to close out open windows on your device to allow the machine to handle the high volume.
4. If you want to take it to the next level, connect external speakers and a microphone to your device. The compact receivers and speakers on most laptops, tablets, and phones will distort the sound.
